  • Circle for Democratic Solidarity: Implementing UNDRIP in Canada

On June 5th, we will have the honour of speaking with Laurie Sargent, the Assistant Deputy Minister of Indigenous Rights at Justice Canada.

Sargent leads the Indigenous Rights and Relations Portfolio which is a team within Justice Canada dedicated to advancing reconciliation through legal and policy excellence. Comprising various specialized units, it provides expert legal services on Aboriginal law, Indigenous rights, and Northern Affairs. The Portfolio supports major clients like Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, focusing on reconciliation initiatives, Indigenous-specific protocols, constitutional and treaty rights, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and self-government negotiations. It plays a key role in managing legal risks and ensuring adherence to federal legislation related to Indigenous peoples.

This meeting will commence the beginning of our volunteer meetings now called the "Circle for Democratic Solidarity." These meetings will allow us to engage with difficult topics as volunteers in solidarity with each other. These meetings will be sort of roundtable discussions, looking to foster innovative ways to engage with these topics of discussion.

This will be a hybrid event. Should you not be able to make it in person, please see the Zoom link below.
